Meet Maxwell, also known as Max or Maxie Moo, our big-hearted, three-legged whirlwind of fun. He is a classic black-and-white beauty with a chunky frame and absolutely no awareness of how large or chaotic he can be. Despite losing a leg as a tiny kitten, he has never let it hold him back and has perfected the art of full-body fly-catching, yes, really! He is strong, brave, ridiculously cheeky and very much one of the stars of the sanctuary.
🖤 Maxwell’s rescue story
In summer 2023, we were contacted by a neighbour just down the road about an injured kitten, his sibling and their mum. His sibling and mum were trapped, neutered and returned, but little Maxwell was in crisis. He had sepsis and a severely wounded leg, so he needed emergency veterinary care and stayed in over the weekend to stabilise. Once he was strong enough, Maxwell had his leg amputated and he hasn’t looked back since. From the very beginning, he showed us just how determined, brave and full of life he was. Strong, cheeky and completely unstoppable, Maxwell truly earned his place as a sanctuary star.
🩺 Maxwell’s health and care
Maxwell is a tripod cat, meaning he lives happily with three legs. He manages brilliantly and has adapted incredibly well, but he still needs a safe environment where his movement, weight, joints and comfort can be monitored as he grows and ages. Because he is energetic, playful and not always aware of his own limits, we keep a close eye on how he climbs, lands, plays and moves around the sanctuary. He may only have three legs, but Maxwell has the confidence and chaos of at least six.
🖤 Maxwell today
Maxwell is playful, affectionate and the undisputed ringleader of The Boys. He is best friends with Rudy and they do everything together and often hide when new people arrive. Maxwell is a foodie, a fly-hunter and an excellent mischief-maker. Although he is sweet-natured, he sometimes forgets he is not a tiny kitten anymore and can overwhelm the older residents with his enthusiasm. He adores his catio and is happiest when lounging beside Rudy, playing chase, or plotting his next bit of mayhem.
Maxwell loves:
- Rudy, his best pal and sidekick
- Playing rough and tumble
- Fly-chasing using his famous “belly slam” technique
- Sitting outside in his donated catio
- Doing his own thing
Maxwell does not appreciate:
- The hoover, which is obviously evil
- Unexpected visitors
- Travelling to the vet
- Loud noises
- Being apart from Rudy
He is affectionate, funny, bold and full of life.
🏠 Maxwell’s future
Maxwell is a permanent sanctuary resident and will stay here with us for life. He lives with his bonded wonky boys, known as “The Boys”, where he is safe, loved, settled and surrounded by cats who understand his energy, confidence and unique way of moving through the world. Because of his tripod mobility, his bond with Rudy and his place within The Boys, Maxwell needs lifelong stability, safe spaces, careful monitoring and an environment built around his needs.For Maxwell, sanctuary means security, companionship, play, comfort and the freedom to be his wonderfully chaotic self.
