Meet Elan, also known as Blan, Scuttle Bag, or just “B” — our tiny, turbo-charged black cat with half the limbs of your average cat, but more than double the spirit. He was born without back paws and without a tail. His body has adapted in the most incredible way, forming little pads on the ends of his stumps, and he scuttles around at top speed with the wildest little manoeuvres you’ve ever seen. He may be small, wonky and completely one-of-a-kind, but Elan is clever, determined and full of character.
🖤 Elan’s rescue story
Elan was found alone in the Elan Valley on a hot August day, dehydrated and injured. A kind family found him, gave him water, and brought him to us. His missing limbs were not caused by trauma after birth. They are believed to be the result of a rare birth defect, possibly linked to interbreeding or something affecting his development while his mum was pregnant. Thanks to donations, Elan was able to see a specialist who helped us understand his condition and needs. With time, healing and love, he learned to move freely, confidently and very much in his own unique way. Elan is now a long-term sanctuary resident and very much rules the house.
🩺 Elan’s health journey
Elan has ongoing medical needs and requires regular monitoring. Because of his birth defects and suspected lower immune system, he has always been more vulnerable to health issues. He has struggled with chronic gingivitis, which recently meant he needed a dental, and he also has ongoing gastric issues that need careful management. His care involves keeping a close eye on his eating, toileting, behaviour, mouth health, weight, comfort and general wellbeing. Small changes can matter a lot with Elan, so routine and monitoring are a big part of keeping him happy and stable. He may be a little wonky, but he is also incredibly resilient.

Elan is clever, expressive and completely one-of-a-kind. He has grown a little grumpier with age and is very good at letting us know when he is unhappy, usually with a well-aimed puddle. But when he is curled up beside you on the sofa, warm and purring, he is absolute magic.
Elan loves:

- Watching birds from the window
- Being the centre of attention
- Calm voices and familiar routines
Elan does not appreciate:
- Loud chaos or sudden changes
- Being ignored
- Boisterous cat energy
- People touching his stumps
- Upset tummies
He is full of personality, full of opinions, and deeply loved for exactly who he is.
🏠 Elan’s future
Elan is a permanent sanctuary resident and will stay here with us for life. Due to his disabilities, ongoing health needs, low immune system, gastric issues and behavioural quirks, Elan needs specialist lifelong care, stability, routine and people who fully understand him. He lives in his own room with his bonded wonky boys, known as “The Boys”, where he is safe, loved, settled and surrounded by cats who understand his way of moving, playing and being. We know Elan’s routines, warning signs, moods, needs and many little ways. For Elan, sanctuary means lifelong security, comfort, careful monitoring, companionship and a life built around exactly what he needs.
